Acupuncture helps Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

A randomised controlled trial on 84 women with Polcystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has found that acupuncture results in long-lasting improvements in monthly menstrual frequency and an improvement in hormone levels (PCOS is caused by an imbalance of hormones). The acupuncture was far superior to no treatment and also more effective than exercise, which is often recommended for PCOS.
The women received acupuncture, mainly in the form of
electro-acupuncture over a 16 week period, initially twice weekly and reducing to one treatment a fortnight, receiving a total of 14 treatments in all. The research suggests that acupuncture may help to induce ovulation in women trying to conceive.
