Anxiety, depression and insomnia all relieved by acupuncture

A randomised controlled trial of people with chronic (longstanding) anxiety that had not been helped by standard treatments were randomised to receive acupuncture or to remain on the waiting list for psychiatric treatment. The anxiety scores of those treated with acupuncture decreased from 58 to 39 with virtually no change in those not receiving acupuncture. The difference was highly statistically significant. The authors concluded that acupuncture "is an effective tool in the management of patients who present with anxiety symptoms that have proven resistant to a number of other routine interventions."
Another study of 48 healthy people aged between 60 and 77 years found that acupuncture was highly effective at improving sleep quality, depression and stress.
